Programme Overview

The Programme focuses on the interdisciplinary study of the cultures that developed in the Eastern Mediterranean region from prehistoric to Byzantine and medieval times. Students explore archaeology, history, ancient literature, linguistics, and cultural heritage through the examination of archaeological, historical, and literary sources. Special emphasis is placed on the civilizations of the Aegean, ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, the Near East, and the Byzantine world. The curriculum also includes courses in modern Greek language, archaeological sciences, museology, and the application of scientific methods to archaeology and historical research.

Programme Structure

The four-year degree is divided into eight semesters of study, with the curriculum progressing from foundational courses in prehistoric and ancient Mediterranean cultures toward advanced specialized seminars and intensive Modern Greek language training (Greek I–VIII).

Selection Criteria & Admissions

• The programme is open exclusively to foreign citizens from EU and non-EU countries.
• Applicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent qualification obtained outside Greece.
• Students must have attended the final two years of secondary education abroad.
• Indicative academic requirement: average high school grade of approximately 70% or equivalent.

Excavation Work & Practical Training

Students are introduced to archaeological excavation theory and field practice through participation in the University Excavation at Marathon.
Practical archaeological experience forms an integral part of the programme’s experiential learning approach.
